In November, 1958, Norfolk & Western was running Y6 class 2-8-8-2 articulated steam locomotives. One operation, based at Williamson, WV, was to serve coal mines on branch lines in that area. Bill and Mary Bill Bauer recorded Y6 2151 leaving Kermit, WV then followed Y6 2136 from Naugatuck to Delbarton, WV as it picked up 127 hopper cars and tackled a long grade en-route, following from their automobile with a reel to reel recorder capturing the sound. All together, you get almost 59 minutes of great audio of these huge locomotives at work with some artistic whistling by their engineers.
