039 B&O / C&O STEAM with Live Sound
30 minutes
This is a very unique program with all sounds recorded on the film as the scenes were shot. Filmed by Fred McLeod, a cinematographer who offered films of trains in the 1950's and 1960's. Mr. McLeod used a 16mm Auricon camera to capture scenes of railroads. The Auricon required considerable effort with the camera, tripod, recorder and automobile batteries for power.
The scenes in this program bring to life steam power on the B&O and C&O railroads in the mid 1950's. The B&O segment includes passenger trains pulled by Pacific's and Mountain type engines and freights with 2-10-2's, 4-8-2's and B&O's giant 2-8-8-4 EM-1 class articulateds. There's even a shot of a fan trip pulled by an EM-1.
The C&O segment contains mainly 2-6-6-6 H-8 class Alleghenies plus one scene of a streamlined 4-6-4 on a passenger train and another scene of a Mikado pushing a train to get it started. Motion pictures of the C&O steam power and particularly the Alleghenies are extremely rare and hard to find, so we're really excited to have this footage for you.
Also included is a preview of "Steam & Diesel on the B&O" (Item 023).
NOTE: BECAUSE THIS PROGRAM HAS LIVE SOUND, IT IS NOT NARRATED SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE SOUNDS AS RECORDED ON THE ORIGINAL FILM.
A descriptive list is included.
